Mentors should be adults (ages 21 and over) who are committed to providing youth with opportunities for positive, nurturing experiences through the planning and implementation of fun, constructive activities in the community. Therapeutic Mentor Job Description
Volunteer Category: Therapeutic Mentor
Commitment Time: Minimum of one year commitment with two to eight hours of contact per week.
Areas of Involvement: Commitment to developing supportive relationship with program participants (mentees ages 4-18) involved in socialization activities,
implementation of therapy goals, academic support, daily living skills, employment preparedness and
job search.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field, or 7 years work experience in the field of Human Services;
- Valid State of Connecticut Motor Vehicle Drivers License, current and valid motor vehicle insurance and access to a car;
- No prior criminal history;
- No prior history of involvement with the Department of Children and Families;
- Sincere desire to be personally involved with another person to help him or her achieve personal and career goals;
- Ability to communicate with children and teenagers openly and nonjudgmentally;
- Strong listening skills;
- Ability to establish a relationship based on equal responsibility and respect;
- Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives; and
- Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural or racial backgrounds.
Responsibilities:
- Make a minimum one year commitment to developing and maintaining a mentor relationship with a child or teenager;
- Attend mentor orientation and training sessions before meeting mentee;
- Attend ongoing mentor training and support sessions;
- Attend weekly supervision sessions with Clinical Supervisor;
- Meet with mentee on a regular basis to establish working relationship and to support mentee in employment goals;
- Assist mentee in solving personal or school-related and other problems that interfere with mentee's success at work; and
- Keep time logs and other information as requested by Program Managers, Program Coordinators and Clinical Supervisor.
